An Illustrated History of Square Enix Holdings Co. Ltd
The history of Square Enix spans back 41 years beginning with a programming contest hosted by a newly created subsidiary, the Enix Corporation. The winners of said competition, Yuuji Horii and Koichi Nakamura, shaped the company’s future and have provided us with some of the greatest and most iconic video games of all-time.
Just a few years later, Masafumi Miyamoto spun off part of his fathers electric company to form Square, a company hoping to profit off the booming home PC market.
In 2003, the two great video game developers merged into an RPG powerhouse that continues to release dozens of incredible titles each year.
This list began as a personal project. Ever since playing Final Fantasy on the Nintendo Entertainment System back in the early 90s, I’ve been a Square Enix fan. In 2023, I made it my personal goal to attempt to play every Square Enix title I had yet to experience. A herculean task to be sure. One of the first roadblocks in my personal quest was figuring out which Square Enix games are available in English, a task I never thought would be so hard. Knowing there must be others with the same goal, I decided to share my efforts here so that we can all have easy access to a comprehensive list.
Some notes to consider, the list below only has games that have been officially localized and are available on a console or through Steam. Only the first version of a game is listed, with any ports, remasters etc. included within the notes. The list is an ongoing project so check back frequently for updates and additions. If you spot an error, please let me know and I’ll do my best to update it as quickly as possible.
Without further ado, here is a comprehensive list of every Square Enix game that has an English localization available:
